Randpark Ridge’s martial artists brings 6 medals back from Durban
Karateka perform admirably at regional championships to do their martial arts academy, and South Africa, proud.
Martial artists from Randpark Ridge brought back six medals from a recent international tournament in Durban.
The athletes of Seishin Martial Arts Academy competed in karate in the AUSC Region 5 Sub Saharan Africa Karate Championships.

Three of the team, Emma Wentzel, Teya Poulsen and Emma O’Gorman were in the team kata final alongside Botswana and clinched the gold medal with their performance and bunkai, which is a choreographed demonstration of realistic applications shown within the kata.
Danielle van Wyk represented South Africa in under-68kg female kumite (sparring) division, and crushed her opponents, coming in first place by a landslide of points.
In addition, Van Wyk was selected to be part of the female team kumite event, which has all national teams competing for the esteemed label of kumite champions. Danielle played a key role in assisting team South Africa bring home the grand champion trophy.

Andre van Wyk represented South Africa in the masters open kumite division. As far as long term experience goes, this division contains some of the hardest and strongest fighters in their age category thus making it an extremely tough division.
Andre successfully made it to the final and fought his hips off. After a grueling three minutes, he took home second place.
In addition to these results, Wentzel was selected to write the AUSC region south coaches examination which allows national coaches to teach at international events such as these, and passed the exams for both kata and kumite.
