Connor Miller and Sekani Vara delivered an outstanding performance for Gauteng Central at the interprovincial tennis tournament, held in Pretoria from January 7 to 11.

The team produced a dominant run to the title, beating KZN A in the quarter-finals, Eastern Cape Aloes in the semi-finals, and Western Cape Cavaliers in the final.

Miller was in fine form throughout the week, winning four of his five matches. His performances earned him selection to the U17 South African schools’ team, which will tour England at the end of June. The tour will give the young player a chance to test himself on the international stage.

Speaking about the honour of representing Gauteng Central, Miller said selection is never easy. “Trials are tough and only six boys and six girls are chosen, so competition is intense. Making the team is a huge honour. Being part of a strong group pushes me to be a better player, and this year we had a great team that went all the way.”

While tennis is often an individual sport, Miller believes teamwork was the key difference. “From position one to six, everyone played for the success of the team. We also had great coaches, and that helped set us apart.”

Miller highlighted the final as his biggest personal challenge. After winning the first set and losing the second, he found himself trailing 3–6 in the deciding 10-point tiebreak, with the crowd loudly backing his opponent. “I fought back to 6–6. My team started cheering, and I took the tiebreak 10–7. It was an amazing atmosphere.”

The achievement has given Miller fresh motivation for the year ahead. “Being selected for the schools’ team and getting the chance to play in England is a dream come true. I can see my hard work paying off, but I know there is still more to do to reach the level I want.”

Miller also paid tribute to those who supported him. He thanked St Stithians Boys’ College, expressing gratitude to his teachers for helping him balance sport and academics, coach Marius Masencamp, as well as his coaches at VHS Academy. He also expressed thanks to his parents for their constant support.

Gauteng Central’s title win, and Miller’s national selection, mark a proud moment for local tennis and highlight the strong talent coming through the region.
