Community show up for fundraiser tournament at Old Parks

Tom Sundawo, a resident at the Ann Harding Cheshire Home, hosts another fundraiser tournament at Old Parks to help him pay his rent.

Tom Sundawo, a resident at the Ann Harding Cheshire Home, held a successful 5-a-side soccer and netball fundraiser tournament at Old Parks Sports Club.

The fundraiser tournament is aimed at assisting Sundawo with rent at the home where he stays. Sundawo was the victim of an armed robbery at his place of work, where he was shot in the head, leaving him a paraplegic.

Although he did receive a payout from workmen’s compensation, it is not enough to cover the monthly costs of staying at the home.

The tournament initially began as a casual get-together which his friends organised 12 years ago. The plan was to play 5-a-side soccer and then have a braai afterwards, but when they heard he was struggling with rent, they suggested turning the event into a fundraiser to help out.

The fundraiser helped him cover the rent and went directly toward covering other needs.

“I hope everyone who comes has a great time – enjoying themselves while also supporting me by contributing towards my rent. I want it to be a fun, relaxed day out for everyone.”

The tournament was a proper community day out. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, music, and a small auction on the day. Participants don’t need to be professional soccer or netball players. It is always a fun day, with an amazing atmosphere.

There was a cash bar, and Sundawo sold boerewors rolls and t-shirts.

The Gokwe team won the title for soccer, and the RSV team were crowned netball champions. Sundawo explained that the day was a bit slow at the beginning, but people showed up in numbers at the end.

“I appreciate every supporter and participant for coming out in numbers. On behalf of Ann Harding, we like to say thanks, and the tournament was a huge success.”
