MOVIE REVIEW: Schuks! Your Country Needs You

Reviewer Dylan Els reviews new South African comedy film Schuks! Your Country Needs You, on behalf of the Randburg Sun and Ster-Kinekor Northgate.

GENRE: Comedy

RUNNING TIME: 1 hour 37 minutes

STARRING: Leon Schuster (Mad Buddies), Alfred Ntombela (Mama Jack), Rob Van Vuuren (Schuks’ Survival Guide to South Africa)

DIRECTED BY: Gary Hofmeyr (Mad Buddies)

RATING:

 three stars

Currently screening at Ster-Kinekor Northgate.

PLOT: Schuks is back, and this time with his son, Wayne (Rob van Vuuren). Wayne wants to bring Schuks back and wants to begin pranking too. They decide to film a movie, and name it Schuks! Your Country Needs You. The father-son duo travel through South Africa, aiming to pull off hilarious jokes and pranks. They prank many with the assistance of Shorty (Alfred Ntombela), and some others. By the end of the 97 minutes, Schuks and Wayne have accomplished their goal of producing their fun-filled film. Some of Schuks’ new victims include Jack Parrow and Bobby Van Jaarsveld.

THE GOOD: The film was, needless to say, hilarious. Schuks kept us viewers on the seat’s edge, waiting and expecting another laugh. Each and every laugh was delivered, better each time. Most people featured were fabulous sports.

THE BAD: I felt somewhat confused at what was really going on as the story continued. Wayne and Schuks were at once pranking and directly afterwards were discussing their movie, which in essence, is now screening. The movie would have probably been better off without Rob van Vuuren acting as Wayne. He could have appeared as himself – Rob van Vuuren.

VERDICT: You are guaranteed be in stitches throughout the film. The issue is that not everyone is interested in the type of film lacking in intensity or thickness of plot, but it is comedy – so it doesn’t need drama. No matter what fault is found in the film, it is good family fun, enjoyable and really entertaining.
