120 medals for TheTaekwon-Do Centre
Paulshof Taekwon-Do Centre wins big at the National Taekwon-Do Championships.
The Taekwon-Do Centre, a Global Taekwondo Federation Club in Paulshof, participated in the fifth South African Chang Hon Ryu Association Championships which took place in Port Elizabeth on the weekend of 11 to 12 October.
Apart from this event being the recognised national selections tournament for applications for national colours by the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) / Martial Arts South Africa (Masa), the overall South African champions in all categories of the traditional chang hon ryu style of taekwondo would be recognised for 2014.
This is the ultimate championship event for taekwondo in South Africa.
Sobum Jenine Hutchinson, chief instructor of the The Taekwon-Do Centre and president of the Global Taekwondo Federation, entered
the competition with her team of 30 competitors. Jenine (26), 4th Dan black belt, and world champion, participated with her team in various competition events, including individual, couples and team patterns, individual and team sparring, individual and team special techniques, self-defence and power-breaking.
From white belt to black belt, the team gave their competitors a run for their money and demonstrated world-class sportsmanship
throughout the tournament. The Taekwon-Do Centre won an unbelievable 120 medals in total. Some team members won seven medals in all categories from as young as 12 years old – Ema Leloup, seven gold, Maxine Pittier six gold and one silver, Nikelo Mbambo five gold, Jenine Hutchinson five gold and two silver, demonstrating the dedication and focus the sport encourages from a very young age.
”Every member of our team walked away with at least one medal which is an amazing feat for our club. I am extremely proud of the exceptional standard of our overall team performance and thankful for the consistent support received from the students and their parents as well as the integrity in which they competed. We won an overwhelming 83 gold, 25 silver and 12 bronze! A truly dedicated team who represented the sport with such pride”, concluded Jenine Hutchinson.
