Artists win big at local graffiti contest

JOHANNESBURG NORTH – The contest was hosted by Sizanani Charity as they worked alongside Timmal Holdings who supplied artists with a huge canvas.

For its recent Youth Day celebration, Sizanani Charity thought it best to think outside the box while they challenged street artists to do art on that box.

On 16 June, the non-profit hosted a graffiti contest in order to raise funds to support their community programmes such as #dignifyme, the winter drive and food drives. The contest winner was Charles Keylock, who walked away with R5 000 cash prize. The runner-up was Justin Catto who received R2 000 prize.

But why graffiti, you ask? Timmal Holdings has a site that is in need of a new look to match the ethos and mission of their group. Through this contest, the company wants to bring attention to creative solutions and partnerships, while they provide an opportunity for street artists to showcase their talents and techniques.

Contests were judged by a local, live audience as well as art professionals. The artists competed for a cash prize as well as the opportunity to have their winning piece exhibited on four containers.

Sizanani was founded on the belief in unity and helping people who are in need while trying to empower them. The charity works with youth, women, children, animals and disabled individuals in order to make a change by finding solutions that address issues that most in this country do not often admit to.
