All art is beautiful to someone – Randburg Art Society painter

Local painter, Ethne Holding keeps an open mind about what makes art beautiful.

Ethne Holding is a flexible artist in her work and keeps an open mind about the tastes of other artists.

The Randburg Art Society member has been painting for about five years.

“I use oils and acrylics,” she told Randburg Sun during a recent society meeting.

“Sometimes I feel like using oil and sometimes I feel like acrylics. So I often change between the two.”

The subjects Holding paints also varies.

“I enjoy trees but I will try to paint anything, even the odd face. Even when my granddaughter went dancing and the photos from that did not turn out well, I painted her.”

When asked what makes an artist good, she refrained from putting this concept into a box.

“A lot of art is personal taste,” Holding explained.

“Yes, there are things an artist will create that most people will appreciate, but we all like different things. So what one person thinks is bad, another thinks is beautiful.”

The society is now back at Blairgowrie Recreation Centre after the centre was closed for an extended period after a botched renovation contract in 2021 and much of 2022.

The group meets every Monday morning to share ideas and work on art among other like-minded people.
