The Randfontein Community Policing Forum held another successful crime awareness meeting at the Randfontein Rugby Club on 10 July
The meeting was for residents who reside in Sector 4, namely Greenhills, Culemborg Park, Helikon Park, Eike Park, Randpoort, Randgate and Homelake.
According to the newly elected Deputy Chairperson of the CPF for Sector 4, Warren Anderson, more than 50 residents attended the meeting.
“We are happy that the attendance is improving with every meeting,” says Anderson.
“This is a clear indication that residents want to get involved in the fight against crime.
“It shows that residents are fed up with the criminal element and are ready to take back their communities.”
According to Anderson, it is disturbing to see that not only property related crimes are escalating but domestic violence and contact robberies are also on the rise.
At the meeting, residents said that they have seen and experienced instances were criminals attack pedestrians from behind and rob them.
They say that criminals are following people traveling in their cars all the way to their homes and once they pull up at their gates, they tend to strike and hijack them.
Police officers present at the meeting revealed that an average of 150 cases of domestic violence are reported per month but say that they are concerned at the fact that almost all of them are withdrawn at some stage.
“This is a clear indication that there is still tolerance of such crimes in our communities and that needs to be dealt with.
“We urge residents to be our eyes and ears in their communities and to look out for their neighbours as well.
“It is only through such efforts that can we really tackle the element of crime head on,” says Anderson.
