SAPS and SANDF arrest 39 during anti-illegal mining blitz in Mohlakeng and Randfontein CBD
A joint security operation targeting illegal mining in the West Rand has netted dozens of suspects alongside explosives and heavy equipment.
A joint SAPS and SANDF operation targeting illegal mining and related crime in Mohlakeng and the Randfontein CBD has resulted in the arrest of 39 suspects.
The operations were conducted between September 14 and 20 as part of Operation Prosper/Karabo. Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said officers arrested the suspects for offences including the possession of explosives, suspected gold-bearing material and illegal mining equipment, as well as contraventions of the Immigration Act and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police seized 17 explosives, 12 blasting cartridges and other explosive-related items, along with generators, jackhammers, water pumps, drills and other equipment allegedly linked to illegal mining.
The SAPS said Operation Prosper/ Karabo will continue as authorities work to disrupt illegal mining operations across Gauteng.
