The West Rand District Municipality in partnership with its local municipalities namely Randfontein, Westonaria, Mogale City and Merafong City, will embark on a Citizens Responsibility Campaign at the Paul Nell Hall in Bekkersdal on 5 September.
The event is set to start at 8am.
According to WRDM spokesperson Dennis Mangope, this is an effort to influence residents to become responsible citizens who will contribute to the development of their own communities.
“Through the campaign, we will be focusing on communities and making sure that the areas in which they live are clean.
“With this initiative, we will try to create a culture where community members guard against anyone who pollutes their environment.
“We also want to foster a society that is responsible for the cleanliness of their environment
“Ultimately, our aim is to create a sense of ownership among residents and influence the responsibility to look after the environment in which they live,” says Mangope.
He adds that the district is expecting at least 1000 volunteers in the form of mayors, councilors, municipal officials and members of the community.
During this time, they will take to the streets in order to clean up identified areas in and around Bekkersdal.
