A massive accident claimed the lives of seven people when two cars smashed into each other on the N14 in Randfontein on 29 September at approximately 11am
According to Gerhardt Nieuwoudt from Mogale City Regional Emergency Services, a veld fire in the area caused a massive smoke cloud obscuring the road which led to the two motorists being distracted and subsequently colliding into each other.
At the time of the accident, a white Colt bakkie carrying two people was travelling towards Ventersdorp and a grey Toyota Yaris carrying six passengers, which includes a 9-month-old baby was traveling in the opposite direction.
“It is unclear as to how exactly the incident occurred but due to the smoke, the two cars collided head on,” says Nieuwoudt.
“As a result, all of the occupants in the Toyota Yaris including the baby died on impact.
The driver of the Colt bakkie sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the Fourways Life Hospital where she later died.
Meanwhile, her child, who is 7-years-old, sustained a fractured leg and is currently being treated at a local hospital.
