Randfontein storm leaves ten families homeless
Three houses and seven shacks were damaged in the disaster.
At least 10 homes in Kleirivier Street in Toekomsrus were severely damaged during a storm on 13 November leaving their occupants homeless.
As a result, three houses and seven shacks were damaged in the disaster.
The Herald spoke to one of the families that were left homeless by the heavy storm.
According to Bulelani Radebe, he together with his wife and three young children are devastated at the loss of their home.
“I don’t know what we are going to do,” says Radebe.
“We have lost everything in the disaster.”
According to Radebe, both he and his wife are unemployed and therefore have no means to repair the damage done.
“We’ve had to rely on the kindness of friends and relatives, and now there’s talk of some help from the municipality,” says Radebe.
The Community Works Project (CWP) in Toekomsrus and the Randfontein Local Municipality Disaster Management team were at the scene of the disaster, picking up what was left of residents’ items.
According to MMC for Social Services in Randfontein Thembi Matuwane, affected residents have refused to be placed at the Toekomrus Community Hall for the evening.
“Residents are currently rebuilding their shacks.
“We have provided food parcels that will sustain them for few days. We have also donated some blankets to them.
“We are currently discussing a way forward with regards to shelter and more information will be communicated once it becomes available,” says Matuwane.
