Local woman in court for friend’s brutal murder

She sliced her friend's stomach open and took out her baby, leaving her for dead in the bloodbath.

Toekomsrus resident and murder accused, Loretta Innocentia Cooke (29) has appeared at the Johannesburg High Court for the brutal murder of her friend on 27 January.

This was to face murder charges after she allegedly sliced her friend’s unborn child from her womb.

Cooke is currently out on bail.

The incident occurred on 6 January 2012 and made headlines in the Herald where it was reported that the deceased, Valencia Behrens (34) was visiting Cooke at the time the incident and under the impression that she would receive a pram as a gift for her unborn baby.

Upon arrival, it is understood that Cooke overpowered Behrens and cut her unborn baby out of he womb.

The child, who survived the ordeal, was left in the passage of the house while Behrens bled to death.

The case was postponed to 3 February.
