34 undocumented foreign nationals arrested in West Rand

A provincial safety blitz has targeted illegal immigration, drug possession, and illicit liquor trade in Randfontein and Mohlakeng.

Police have arrested 34 undocumented foreign nationals and eight people for drug possession during a roadblock in the Randfontein and Mohlakeng precincts.

The roadblock formed part of a multidisciplinary Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela 2 led by Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni on October 15.

According to Gauteng police’s corporate communication officer Sergeant Mpho Ramabulana, the drive focused on crime prevention, law enforcement and ensuring community safety in the West Rand District.

In a separate development, Gauteng detectives arrested 955 suspects for various crimes across the province, including 238 linked to crimes against women and children.

Police also shut down an illegal shebeen for contravening the Liquor Act, while traffic officers issued fines to motorists.

As part of the campaign, officers distributed crime prevention pamphlets and engaged with community members.

The engagements focused on raising awareness about crime prevention and personal safety, encouraging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions against criminal activities.

Operation Shanela 2 forms part of the police’s broader Safer Festive Season efforts to combat crime, enforce the law and strengthen public safety through coordinated law enforcement operations.
