Traffic Department out in full force

Some stern warnings from Randfontein’s Traffic Department.

The Randfontein Traffic Department will be out in full force this festive season and drivers are urged to take it easy on the roads.

“We are ready for the holidays and will be out in full force until the end of January. We warn people drinking and driving – it is very dangerous and we will not be lenient to those caught,” said Chief of Traffic in Randfontein, Kenny Mampondo.

Mampondo advised people to take regular breaks on long journeys; driving tired is just as bad as drinking and driving. Stop, walk around your car and stretch. Consider pulling over clear from danger and catch a wink if you are really tired.

“Parents, please don’t give your cars to your children to drive if they do not have a licence. Pedestrians should stay visible and if possible, walk on the sidewalks facing oncoming traffic. At least 50 per cent of road accidents involve pedestrians at pedestrian crossings and intersections,” said Mampondo.

He said cyclists are seen as pedestrians and therefore should obey the rules of the road, such as stopping at red lights and stop signs.

The Licensing Department will be closed from 29 December to 2 January and on public holidays.
