Rand West Neighbourhood Watch to shut down after 3 years of service
Despite years of dedication to community safety, dwindling volunteer numbers and mounting responsibilities have left the organisation unable to continue.
The Rand West Neighbourhood Watch will cease operations on Sunday, November 1, following three years of keeping Randfontein residents safe.
Chairperson Henry Boyce stated that the decision was not made lightly.
He explained that over the past year, they have battled to recruit new patrollers and maintain sufficient support to keep their operations running. Despite their continued efforts, they have reached a point where their existing patrollers have become exhausted and disheartened.
“We fully understand that every patroller has a personal life, family commitments, work responsibilities and other obligations. Our patrollers are volunteers who give their time, fuel and energy because they care about the safety of their community,” said Boyce.

He added that what was meant to be a voluntary service driven by a shared love for their community has increasingly become a constant struggle to encourage patrollers to fulfil their schedules, recruit new volunteers, follow up on outstanding membership contributions and manage the many operational responsibilities.
Boyce said these duties are carried out in their own time, without payment, and alongside their personal responsibilities.
“One of our greatest disappointments has been the lack of support when we appeal to the community for more patrollers, while expectations and demands for our services continue. A neighbourhood watch can’t survive on the dedication of a few individuals alone. It requires commitment, participation and support from the community it serves.”
He added that they have given this organisation their time, energy and hearts, doing everything in their power to keep it going. However, they have reached a point where they can no longer continue under these circumstances.
Boyce explained that members who have paid their contributions in advance will be contacted individually regarding the refund of any unused portion of their payments.
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to every patroller, co-patroller and loyal member who stood with us, supported our efforts and contributed towards making our community a safer place. Your dedication and support have never gone unnoticed, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
According to Boyce, this decision comes with sadness, but also with the understanding that even the most dedicated volunteers have their limits.
“Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve our community. We wish every one of you well and sincerely hope that the safety and well-being of our community will continue to matter to those who call it home,” he concluded.
