Members of a family living in a complex in Geldenhuys Street, Randpoort are at their at wits’ end, because they encounter huge amounts of floodwater running through their garden every time it rains.
Joe de Bruyn and his mother, Bettie van Schalkwyk, have lived in the complex since September 2015.
Van Schalkwyk says that right after the first rain in 2015, the flooding started. The flooding is caused by the blocked storm drain right outside the complex.
“My son has phoned the Randfontein Local Municipality numerous times, but in the last nine months, they’ve only responded once. The problem was not resolved – all they did was sweep some sand surrounding the drain away.”
Van Schalkwyk added,
The floodwater rushes through our garden, making it impossible to do any gardening, and our dogs have to sleep in the garage to keep them safe.”
De Bruyn says that it looks like a river running through their property and that of his neighbours.
“I have given up, I do not know where to turn to for help,” says de Bruyn.
The Herald contacted Tshidiso Thlarpe, Randfontein Executive Mayoral spokesperson, regarding the matter. He advised that he has personally logged a case and that it will be attended to as soon as possible.
