“I’m gatvol for the ANC” – DA Leader
DA brings out big guns for upcoming local election.
“I am gatvol for the ANC,” said Mmusi Maimane, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in a speech delivered in Randfontein recently.
Maimane was visiting Randfontein and Westonaria to rally DA supporters from the two areas before the merger of the two municipalities becomes official.
He visited two unlikely areas – Bekkersdal and Toekomsrus – in a bid to secure votes from these areas in the upcoming municipal elections. Ward councillors from the two areas were introduced to the people in order for them to see the faces that will represent the DA in the areas.
Maimane promised jobs, electricity, water and sanitation as well as a ruling party without corruption to the two areas in exchange for their votes. “Services, services are what the people want,” he said.
In his speeches, he addressed Bekkersdal’s growing concern with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) jobs which residents say they cannot get if they are unable to prove by means of documentation that they are members of the African National Congress (ANC).
“It’s [the EPWP] actually big corruption and we know about it,” Maimane said.
In response to Bekkersdal residents’ frequent protests he said, “We can’t change government with protests, we can change government with votes.” His words come after Bekkersdal residents – among others – protested at the Westonaria Local Municipality.
In Toekomsrus, he addressed residents’ concerns about housing and promised that such issues would not exist should the DA be in power.
Allegations flew as Maimane accused the police of working with drug dealers in Toekomsrus, which is why youth in the area cannot move away from drug abuse.
Maimane and the local councillors are determined to win these areas in the August municipal election.
