Long awaited wheelchairs finally arrive

'These wheelchairs are not necessarily BMWs, they are more like older model Volkswagens'

The Randfontein Local Municipality has heard the disabled community’s plea for equipment to assist them in day-to-day life.

A number of municipal officials recently (6 July) set out on a journey to donate wheelchairs to disability centres in the greater Randfontein area.

The municipality’s first stop was the Toekomsrus Workshop for the Disabled, which received six wheelchairs, each equipped with a specially-designed wrench and an air pump. An atmosphere of excitement filled the room as Mzi Khumalo, Randfontein Executive Mayor gave his speech.

The municipality also donated six wheelchairs to the Itereleng Disability Centre in Mohlakeng. They have plans to donate to more centres and individuals, including Golden Highway and the Rainbow Daycare Centre, both of which were closed at the time of the handovers in Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng.

“These wheelchairs are not necessarily BMWs, they are more like older model Volkswagens. But if you clean them and take good care of them, they will become your BMWs,” Khumalo said.

The wheelchairs are built in such a way that if they are damaged, some parts can be replaced at little additional cost. Khumalo worked with a Canadian-based international wheelchair company – Free Wheelchair Mission – to achieve the dream of supplying all disabled community members with disability equipment.

The theme of the wheelchair distribution initiative is #RandfonteinCares. The aim of the project is to promote awareness of disabilities, strengthen relationships with members in the disabled sector and to advance the disability agenda.
