Women against women Abuse (WAWA), in partnership with several other organisations, celebrated Mandela Day by giving clothes to the less fortunate.

WAWA, which does it for Nelson Mandela every day, teamed up with the South African Police Service, the Department of Public Safety, the Community Policing Forum, the Baptist Theological College and the Local Drug Action Committee as part of their Mandela Day activities.

For this day, privileged people were urged to donate their old clothes for a good cause – and so they did.

All the organisations worked together to decorate the fence around the Toekomsrus Police Station with some of the donated clothing to welcome the people in need. The rest of the clothes were spread out in the Victim Empowerment Centre, where the individuals were encouraged to pick their own clothes, in honour of the theme for the day, which was ‘Your old clothes are new to Us’.

People really need all the support possible; young and old.

“During these trying times, WAWA assists in every way possible as best we can,” said Francina Julius, shelter coordinator.

Enrico Bhana, the Men in Boys coordinator from WAWA Toekies added, “They decided to call it ‘Online Shopping’ because the individuals were able to pick and choose what they liked.”

Their mission wasn’t just to provide a warm outfit to ward off the winter chill, but to serve the people with warm soup and vetkoek on the day, too.
