Police seize illegal goods worth over R400 000 in Randfontein
A targeted law-enforcement operation at four Randfontein shops has resulted in the seizure of 9 633 counterfeit and illicit items valued at more than R408 000.
Police seized more than 9 600 counterfeit and illicit items valued at R408 585 during a crackdown at four shops in Randfontein on September 1.
This follows the August 28 operation that took place in Randfontein.
According to Gauteng police communications officer Sergeant Mpho Ramabulana, the operation formed part of a province-wide drive targeting counterfeit, contraband and illicit goods.
Among the items seized were 8 282 counterfeit tobacco products, 1 026 counterfeit consumable products and 112 counterfeit textile items.
Police also confiscated 236 pharmaceutical products, nine items of poison and 20 illicit honey products.
The operation involved members of the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, Commercial Unit and Visible Policing, supported by brand protection representatives and various government departments.
The Randfontein operation was one of four conducted across Gauteng between August 31 and September 3. Overall, police seized 50 991 items worth R1.5m and arrested five suspects.
Police have warned that intelligence-driven operations targeting the illegal trade in goods will continue across the province.
