At the beginning of the month, a new Miss Mohlakeng was selected.
This year’s Miss Mohlakeng is University of Johannesburg (UJ) student, Lewatle Diale. She won the pageant on Saturday, 1 October at Mohlakeng’s Ramosa Hall. The win comes after several attempts by Lewatle to win the title.
Close behind her was 12-year-old Lebo Kapadisa as First Princess. The title of Second Princess went to 15-year-old Reatile Nong.
The organisers of the pageant, Lucky Mnisi and Josiah Morobe, said they’re very happy with the growth of the event. The event has taken off even though the pair face financial constraints.
“What we have realised is that beauty pageants are still a popular fad with township youth. We even got interest from girls and boys from outside Mohlakeng. It is taxing to run an event of this kind on a tight budget. We ran this one from our own pockets with no sponsors,” Lucky said.
Since the growth of the event needs to be sustained, Lucky called on parents and local businesses to partner with them, thus helping get children off the streets, and preventing teen pregnancies and drug abuse.
