Main Road closed after alleged hazardous spill

Local authorities yet to clarify what fluid was spilled from a container – Main Road had to be closed as a result.

The Herald is seeking clarity from the authorities as to what fluid – alleged to be hazardous – was seen leaking from a container in the Randfontein CBD on Tuesday 31 January.

Just after 4pm that day a vehicle – details unknown at this stage – allegedly lost its trailer, causing it and the container on it to fall on its side.

Parts of Main Road had to be closed as a result and pedestrians were asked to take a different route.

According to an eyewitness, 48-year-old Errens Oosthuizen, the incident took place near a retail store just after the traffic lights at the intersection of 6th Street and Main Road.

Another witness said the container apparently contained some sort of green chemical fluid, said to be extremely dangerous.

The fluid, he said, had a very sharp smell to it. The Fire Department also had to wear special clothing when they were on the scene. The clean-up of the scene continued until after 8pm. Various social groups inquired about this as it was causing traffic delays and some residents were concerned about possible injuries to residents.

No injuries could be confirmed, and Kenny Mampondo, Randfontein’s Traffic Police Chief, is yet to comment on the matter.
