The Ward 7 Democratic Alliance (DA) Committee cleaned up the first of many illegal dumping sites in the area during the weekend.
The committee cleaned up along Arend Drive, near Lazaar Avenue, in Eike Park, an area that is regularly filled with illegally dumped garbage.

The area has previously been identified as problematic by surrounding residents. The problem around the secluded forest-like area is not restricted to where the team cleaned up – further down the Lazaar Avenue in Ward 3, more illegal dumping can be found.
Alwyn van Tonder, the DA councillor for Ward 3, has cleaned the previously mentioned site time and time again. The issue got progressively worse, and eventually Van Tonder brought it up in council, and signage prohibiting dumping was put up.

However, despite the signage, the illegal dumpers were not deterred. Van Tonder later warned residents about hefty illegal dumping fines should their business material or personal documents be found at the site and traced back to them.
Craig Harrison, DA councillor for Ward 7, said the team filled approximately 20 black binbags with rubbish found at the location, and transported it by bakkie to the Randfontein Dumping Site.
What’s shocking, Harrison said, was that they cleaned the area in the morning, and later that afternoon, when he drove past it, someone had already dumped rubbish – again.

Harrison is urging the community to refrain from dumping. He said they should rather take their excess rubbish to the Randfontein Dumping Site, where it belongs.

“This is just one of the many clean-ups the committee will be tackling in our ward. We have identified another area that we will be cleaning up in May,” he said.
