The campaign was prompted by the poisoning of the dog belonging to a resident, Tina Grobler, in October last year during a criminal activity.
“She stopped everyone travelling past her house and explained that she wanted to fight the criminals who killed her little dog. A WhatsApp group named ‘Pelzvale Group’ was then created and all citizens were invited to participate in the fight against crime,” said Attie Wagner, the CPF secretary.
Wagner said that during the run of the campaign, attendance at meetings slowly grew because of the common need to fight crime. The honourable way each positive person was accommodated resulted in a close bond being formed.
“The criminals who poisoned the dogs were caught with inadequate evidence, and left with a message: ‘Criminals are not welcome in our community’,” Wagner said.
“Although we do not have all the statistics to prove it, the CPF forum estimates that the crime rate has dropped by approximately 80 per cent since October 2017.
“On 21 February, during a monthly meeting, one of the members – Judge Letsholo – suggested we host a ‘Fund Raising Day’ for the CPF on 1 May.”
He said the first activity of the day was performed by the teenagers of the Path Finders who marched like real, proud soldiers, followed by a warm welcome to everyone and an introduction by Judge Letsholo. The Morning Prayer that followed was led by Peter Webster from the Path Finders.
“It was made clear that the main purpose of the event is to share information and to serve the Pelzvale community. We strive to make Pelzvale the ‘Place of Choice’.
“Our branch councillor, Mr Daniel Machaba, actively communicated with the community about resolving issues, with a promise to improve the services to Pelzvale. The community was grateful to have the opportunity to meet with him,” Wagner added.
