Randfonteiner going to World Choir Games

Local music school teacher to accompany the Drakensberg Old Boys' Choir to the World Choir Games in Tshwane.

A local music school teacher, Annelien du Plessis, 57, will accompany the Drakensberg Old Boys’ Choir to the World Choir Games which takes place in Tshwane this month.

“I will be the accompanist for the Drakensberg Old Boys’ Choir for the competition,” Annelien said.

Annelien went to Hoërskool Riebeeckrand in Grade 8 and then later pursued her passion for music by going to the Pro Arte School in Pretoria before she found her way back to Randfontein. She has been teaching music at the FJL Wells Music School for 14 years.

“I also have a history with Drakies. I used to be a teacher at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School,” she added. “They are very strict and they do not allow just anyone to get involved with the choir, so I am honoured to get the chance to play with them.”

The choir has a lot to look forward to besides the games. “We played some of Franco Pienaar’s compositions and he approached us to record an album.”

One of Annelien’s learners who has just finished school is currently participating in the World Championship Of Performance Arts (WACOPA) in LA for song and piano.

The Drakensberg Old Boys Choir will participate in the games from Tuesday to Saturday.

“It’s a honour to be the accompanist for a choir in the World Choir Games and to have a learner participating in the WACOPA at the same time,” Annelien added.
