Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp met with farmers in Randridge, Randfontein, on Tuesday, September 1, for an open dialogue on some of the key challenges facing South Africa’s agricultural sector.

The discussion covered problems including Foot and Mouth Disease, rural safety, export markets and farmland ownership, with farmers allowed to raise their concerns directly with the minister.

Farmers also raised concerns about increasing municipal rates and the deteriorating condition of roads leading to farms, saying these issues are placing additional pressure on farming businesses and operations in the area.

Westonaria farmer Dirk Botha said rising municipal rates were a particular concern for farmers.

“Municipal rates have gone up like crazy in the past year, and seemingly the farmers are the ones feeling it the most,” he said.

The condition of roads leading to farms was also raised, with farmers saying a lack of maintenance had contributed to their deterioration and was affecting farming businesses.

Aucamp stressed the importance of government working closely with farmers to protect livelihoods, strengthen food security and support a sustainable agricultural sector.

“Because a stronger agricultural sector is built with farmers, not just for farmers,” said Aucamp.

The engagement highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between government and farmers in finding practical solutions to the challenges facing the industry.
