Two kidnapped, assaulted by group for ‘stealing’

Two men kidnapped and assaulted, one of them seriously injured, for allegedly stealing cellphone from a taxi at the Bekkersdal Taxi Rank.

Eight suspects between the ages of 25 and 43 were arrested in connection with the kidnapping and assault of two people on Monday, 15 January.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the two victims were accused by the group of suspects of stealing a cellphone from a taxi said to have been parked at the Bekkersdal Taxi Rank.

“It is alleged by one of the victims that he was at the taxi rank with his friend when they were attacked after being accused of stealing a cellphone. He further alleged that they were not given a chance to explain and were thrown into a taxi and taken to Simunye where they were further assaulted,” Lefakane said.

She added that the victims were later taken back to Bekkersdal where they reported the matter to the police.

“The other victim was taken to hospital due to the severity of his injuries,” Lefakane added.

Lefakane said the suspects have all already appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on charges of kidnapping and assault.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the station commander condemned the behaviour and urged people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
