Man arrested for stealing 66 cattle near Vleikop

One suspect arrested near Vleikop for stealing 66 cattle from an Elandsvlei farm two days ago.

A suspect aged 23 was swiftly arrested by the Randfontein Police two days ago when he was caught with 66 cattle stolen from an Elandsvlei farm and a quantity of live ammunition in his possession.

Constable Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson said, “It was alleged that a 45-year-old farmer went to check on his cattle at about 5am on Wednesday, 23 January, only to find that they had been stolen. The complainant did his own investigation and noticed that the fence was cut and his 66 cattle were stolen.”

She added the complainant hired a private helicopter to search for his stock.

While searching, he discovered that the stock was being hidden between Westonaria and Venterspos in a temporary kraal near Vleikop.

“He contacted the police and Community Police Forum (CPF) when he noticed people running away from the scene. The police and CPF members managed to arrest one person shortly after they arrived. He was searched and the police found live ammunition in his possession.”

The man was arrested and detained and will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon. The farmer managed to identify all his stock and it was returned to him.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein’s station commander, is requesting the public to provide a contact number for their next of kin in case they need to be contacted when the owner cannot be reached.

He also said that livestock owners must have documents for their animals and that the stock should be marked so that it can easily be identified.
