#MunicipalMonday – Water leaks concern taxpayers

Taxpayers say the increasing water leaks will hit them hard in their pockets.

The increasing number of water leaks in Randfontein has become a growing concern for the taxpayers, who said they will feel the burden in their pockets.

Frans Le Grange who was speaking on behalf of the taxpayers, said on Darter and Convent Streets in Greenhills, water leaks have been seen wasting pure water that could be used for human consumption, for at least two years.

“We have reported on this so many times, but nothing has been done yet. People in this area have been complaining because they are aware that this is not only a waste of money, but an essential service needed by many in the town,” Le Grange said.

He went on to say he had even submitted a letter to the council about this grievance to bring the problem under the attention of the two managers; however, the move had not yielded any results.

“The amount of water that is running out and going to waste is obvious. We have estimated that more than a litre is going to waste every minute.

The other issue that is frustrating us, is that municipal vehicles are driving around fitted with radios, but are not even reporting on matters like this.

“We don’t know whether municipal employees want to do their job or not, but this is definitely their job,” Le Grange said.

It is not known whether this is the result of burst pipes or faulty water meters.

Le Grange said other known areas that have water leaks or faulty water meters include Fountain Heights Flat number 14, a flat in Toekomsrus, Kliniek Street, Robin Park, and Greenhills Avenue.
