Matriculant arrested for dangerous weapon and ‘drugs’

Police confirm a 17-year-old learner was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon and suspected drugs at a local school.

Police have confirmed that a 17-year-old matric learner at TM Letlhake Secondary School has been arrested for allegedly being in possession of a butcher’s knife and bottle-neck stuffed with a substance suspected to be drugs.

According to Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, the arrest was made during the random school search operation spearheaded by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety under the leadership of MEC Faith Mazibuko on Tuesday, 9 October.

“Due to the fact that he is a minor, the suspect had to give his statement in the presence of his sister who is an adult, and was released into her custody as his guardian. He is due to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court today, 10 October,” Swart said.

Swart said rehabilitative programmes will be used to assist the learner to reform.
