Bekkersdal Police and others visited two schools in Zuurbekom to conduct random searches, and held a crime awareness campaign earlier this week.

The Bekkersdal Police together with local traffic police and patrollers visited two schools in Zuurbekom to conduct random searches. They combined it with a crime awareness campaign on Tuesday, 15 October.

According to Sergent Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, school safety around the Bekkersdal policing precinct continues to be their biggest priority.

As the learner will soon start with their final exams, the Bekkersdal Police dedicated their time to ensuring that there are no unnecessary disruptions by undisciplined learners who at times carry weapons or even drugs in and around the school premises.”

She said this week, they targeted Zuurbekom Intermediate School where Grades 7 to 9 learners were searched for dangerous weapons and drugs. Nothing irregular was found. The second school they targeted was Izanokhanyo Primary School where awareness was created about rape, sexual offence and teenage pregnancy.

Learners in both schools were encouraged to always love and appreciate each other.

“We donated sanitary towels to needy learners and encouraged them to love and care for fellow learners. We also advised them to be vocal about any form of abuse affecting them.”

Management of both schools were grateful for the visit and thanked the officers for always monitoring their schools and ensuring that there are no threats within the vicinity of the school.

The schools will be working hand in glove with us to ensure that they become a better and safer place.”

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson commended the members for their initiative. He further encouraged the youth to attend school so that they can get an education and ensure a better future.

“Refrain from associating yourselves with bad conduct as it will catch up with you at a later stage,” he said.
