Athlete cop chases and arrests fleeing armed robber

A police officer, who turned out to be a professional athlete, showed off his speed as he chased and brought down a fleeing suspect.

One suspected robber armed with a knife was arrested by a cop who is also an athlete after he and an accomplice targeted two brothers in Bekkersdal during the weekend.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident took place at about 4.30pm on Sunday, 10 November.

“Two brothers were allegedly walking from Bekkersdal to Simunye when they were accosted by two unknown men armed with knives. The suspects allegedly demanded cellphones from the brothers. When they resisted, one of the suspects grabbed a J1 Samsung from one of the siblings and that’s when the fight broke out,” Lefakane said.

Lefakane added that when police noticed a scuffle between four people in Panyanya Street, they intervened and the suspects started running into a nearby veld.

“Little did they know that Constable Dingaan Mokoto was not only an officer of the law but a professional athlete too. He chased the two suspects and managed to arrest a 20-year-old who was still carrying the phone that was taken from the victim. The other suspect fled, but police are on his trail,” Lefakane added.

Lefakane said the arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the police members on duty for the arrest and urged the community to always remain safe by not walking in secluded areas.

“Please walk in groups and report crime or anything that may be suspicious. Do not take the law into your own hands,” he said.
