More than R13K worth of drugs seized in stop-and-search

A routine stop-and-search operation on the N12 in Randfontein led to the discovery of more than 500 plastic bags of drugs with an estimated street value of R13 800.

A 32-year-old man was arrested earlier this week after he was found in possession of a substance suspected to be drugs during a routine stop-and-search operation held on the N12.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the estimated street value of the substance is R13 800.

He is to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

“On Monday, 11 November, two officers spotted two suspicious-looking men. They stopped and searched the men and inside a bag carried by one of the men they found more than 500 plastic bags containing what is suspected to be Nyaope and/ or Rock, with an estimated street value of R13 800. He was arrested immediately.”

Lefakane added this comes shortly after the safer festive season operation launched by Bheki Cele, the Minister of Police. The operation includes roadblocks and intensive searches by police for illegal substances and weapons.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, commended his officers for making a swift arrest.

“This arrest will ensure that more drugs have been removed from society,” he said.
