A man was shot and killed while another person was shot in the chest during an armed robbery in the Mandela section of Bekkersdal last week.
According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the incident happened when one of the two victims was confronted by robbers while locking up a tuck-shop.
“While proceeding to the backyard where he sleeps, he was confronted by five armed men who demanded that he re-open the shop. In the process, suspects fired a shot that hit the victim in the chest.

“His assistant, who was inside a room nearby, heard the gunshot and opened the door to investigate, but the suspects opened fired on him as well, killing him instantly. The suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of money, cigarettes and airtime vouchers,” Lefakane said.
Lefakane added that the police are investigating a case of business robbery and murder.
“We are looking for five suspects,” she said.
Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, urged the community to report any suspicious persons with an unlicensed firearm.
