Mom of three arrested for child negligence, abuse

Zuurbekom mother to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates' Court for child negligence and abuse.

A 37-year-old mother from Zuurbekom has been arrested and charged with child negligence and abuse.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, this comes after the mother allegedly left her two younger children aged 6 years and 6 months respectively in the care of her eldest child, aged 11 years, during the past weekend.

The mother is to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 19 November.

“The arrest comes after a tip-off from the community. It has been alleged that in many of the incidents, the mother would return home and assault and scold her eldest child for not completing chores.

“The neighbours became aware of the mother’s behaviour and alerted other family relatives to lay charges, claiming that it was not the first time the alleged abuse was taking place,” Lefakane said.

Lefakane said in line with the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, the National Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole has called on police to commit themselves to ensuring that Gauteng is a place of safety throughout the festive season and make sure that every crime is brought to book.

“We strongly condemn violent behaviour towards women and children,” Lefakane added.
