Grade 12 learners of Ithuteng Secondary School finished their matric year with a career expo on Tuesday, 26 November. It was held on the day the matrics wrote their last paper.
The expo was coordinated by the Randfontein Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit as well as the Rand West Parliamentary Constituency.

According to Constable Portia Mabala of Randfontein Police Social Crime Prevention Unit, the aim was to give the learners that extra bit of knowledge on how to further their education post matric.
“We recently visited the school to do a motivational talk but saw that there was great need among the learners for guidance about what to do after matric. It highlighted the fact that learners from rural areas are deprived of valuable information and are often without facilities to research their favourite career options.

“We want these learners to know where to go and what to do, so that they can be fully prepared when heading into the ‘big world’,” she said.
The matrics also had the opportunity to have their documents certified and apply for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
“As the police, we will also give motivational talks about various career options within the South African Police Service. Most importantly, now that they are leaving school, we wanted to impress on them that getting an education and staying out of trouble is the way to go, not crime,” Mabala added.
Some of the exhibitors on the day included The Fibre Processing and Manufacturing Seta, Inseta, the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority, the Mining Qualification Authority, Rand West Parliamentary Constituency, the Department of Labour, NSFAS and the police.
