Old building to become place of safety for the abused?

Old, abandoned IEC building in Toekies revamped into a shelter for abused women and children in Randfontein.

The Myburgh Foundation has taken it upon itself to clean the old and abandoned IEC building near the municipal offices on Stubbs Street.

According to Randy Christian, co-founder of the foundation, the building will be used as a shelter for abused women and children in Randfontein.

Members of the foundation rolled up their sleeves to clean the abandoned building. Photo submitted.

“We are doing this with the hope of convincing the municipality to give us permission to use the house to benefit the needy and vulnerable,” Randy said.

“The move is part of the foundation’s initiative to turn unused and abandoned buildings into safe shelters.

The house has been vandalised. Photo submitted.

“We want to prevent vagrants from destroying this house, hence we took this initiative to voluntarily clean and renovate the house,” he said.

“We decided to intervene while we await an answer from the relevant authorities, mitigating the chance of having the house totally destroyed as was the case with the old Home Affairs offices in Toekomsrus.”
