Kenny Mampondo, Rand West City Traffic Chief, said the condition of the two officers who are in ICU remains stable.

Mampondo said although there were three Traffic Police members in the vehicle, one of them managed to escape without injuries. “That officer was admitted to hospital for trauma,” Mampondo said.

He added that one of the two officers, a man, was shot in the foot, while his female colleague sustained an injury to her back.

“The robbers obviously used high-calibre weapons because the damage done to the vehicle was serious; the engine was riddled with bullets that destroyed most of its components,” Mampondo said.

He said the visit was aimed at showing their members love and support, and he wished them a speedy recovery.

We are very grateful and we thank God that our members are still alive, because we can’t even think about anything worse,” Mampondo said.

He said they were at the scene from 9.30am to 5pm and recovered at least 18 spent cartridges.
