Clash of the Titans dance competition rocks the West Rand

The Dance Hub Company based in Randfontein held their Clash of the Titans dance competition at Silverstar recently where dancers from all over the West Rand competed.

Dancers from all over the West Rand battled it out during the Clash of the Titans dance competition at the Barnyard Theatre at Silverstar this past weekend.

Hosted by The Dance Hub Company in Greenhills, Randfontein, one of their organisers and choreographers, Khaya Dhladhla said they started the event because of the differences between street dancers and studio-based dancers.

“We wanted to create an environment where both cultures of dance can meet and learn, draw inspiration and compete against one another. It started off as a hip-hop competition but now we’ve branched out to be inclusive of all styles and dances.

“It’s one of the few competitions that is not profit-based as we try to invest all the proceeds from the entries and ticket sales back into the dancers by increasing the prize money every ear.

“After we have paid all our expenses to run a professional competition, we give back all the profit that we’ve made by giving out money, vouchers, presenting workshops, and giving gifts that enhance the dancers’ way of training.”

Khaya added that this year they sponsored a group from Randfontein to compete in the competition for the first time as they understand that not everybody can afford the competition fees nor entry to the competition.

“The aim now for Clash of the Titans is to make sure that it’s inclusive – not only all dance cultures but background-wise too.”
