West Rand District Police collaborated with various entities for a safety campaign at two schools in Rand West City on Wednesday March 2.

According to Captain Raymond Sebonyane, spokesperson of the West Rand District Police, they visited TM Letlhake Secondary School in Simunye, and Westonaria High School.

Sebonyane said 486 learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 were engaged on various subjects such as teenage pregnancy, bullying, substance abuse and gangsterism.

The aim of visiting the schools was to support teachers with the social ills they encounter at the schools and ensure that discipline was well maintained,” Sebonyane said.

He added that during the campaign, learners were encouraged to focus on their studies, to become future leaders and role models, and to make their parents and teachers proud; but most of all to make themselves proud.

Sebonyane added that police confiscated one pack of twenty cigarettes, a pair of scissors and two boxes of matches during their search at the schools.

“Learners were further encouraged to run the race and be persistent in finishing their school career. Principals and teachers of both schools were delighted with the presence of the visitors and expressed their appreciation towards the whole team.

Captain Eddie Boboko, on behalf of the District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, thanked members and stakeholders for making the day a success,” Sebonyane said.

The following organisations were also involved in the campaign: West Rand District Municipality (WRDM); Social Crime Prevention Unit; Bekkersdal sector managers, Gauteng Department of Education; Gauteng Department of Social Development; Gauteng Department of Community Safety; Rand West Traffic Department (RWTD); Youth Desk; Victim Empowerment unit, and the Gender-based Violence Brigades.
