WATCH: Why do we celebrate Freedom Day?
Another public holiday is here – but do you know the story behind it? The South African government explains.
Freedom Day, observed on April 27, is an annual commemoration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections, held in 1994.
The South African government officially defines it as ‘an annual celebration of South Africa’s first non-racial democratic elections of 1994’.

It holds deep significance as it marks the end of more than 300 years of colonialism, segregation, and white minority rule, and the beginning of a democratic government led by Nelson Mandela, alongside the establishment of a new state founded on a new constitution.
Freedom Day is also widely regarded as a time to reflect on the progress made towards achieving the vision of a better life for all.
