Municipal contractor’s truck caught dumping … illegally!

When asked, the workers contracted to the municipality said they were given permission to discard of the waste in the veld.

A truck contracted to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) to collect and dispose of sewage was captured on camera dumping sewage illegally in an open veld on Aloe Road, Greenhills just behind a high school.

The truck was spotted by concerned resident Frans le Grange who was driving around in the area on August 22.

“For the past weeks, I as a taxpayer have discovered that sewage is being pumped directly onto the open field near the school.

This is done by workers contracted to the municipality and when I asked why they were littering the area, they simply told me that the municipality gave them permission to discard of the waste in this way.

“It goes without saying that it is disgusting and a health hazard, as well as a criminal offence,” said Le Grange who added that it had caused a stinking mess in the area.

The Herald approached RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa for comment and he said, “We were not aware of this and it could be a case of misconduct by the workers.

“We will however look into it. We don’t dump anywhere; we dump at the Randfontein Treatment Works.”
