Randfontein Police Station Communication and Social Crime Prevention held a talk about a healthy lifestyle and community engagement with the elderly at PJ Maree clinic in Toekomsrus.

Randfontein police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the talk and community engagement took place on Friday, July 29 in partnership with Mental Health, Women Against Women and Children Abuse, Carryou Ministry, loveLife, Occupational Health, Youth Friendly, Environmental Health, ward councillor Balderic Dreyer and Shunammite Church pastor Andre Roberts.

Hendricks said gender-based violence, missing persons, substance abuse, drugs, hijackings and house robberies were addressed during the morning.

The elderly people were also educated to come forward and report crime, and to make use of our victim-friendly room at the police station if they face challenges with family members abusing them. They were urged to report cases and refrain from withdrawing them again. They were also asked to be more vigilant.”

Nursing sister Philisiwe Mtshali spoke to the elderly about not missing their dates to collect their medication and to take it on time. She also informed them that hypertension was the most common illness among the elderly people and that they should make sure to exercise.
