Cancer fundraising event to be held for Hillside resident
Entrance to the event will be R20 and the money raised will go towards assisting the local resident in her fight against cancer and will pay for her treatment.
Local workshop VDM Auto together with some community members from Hillside will be hosting a cancer fundraising event called What’s your superpower? in effort to help a local resident who suffers from liver cancer.
This will be held on October 15 at the Highway Bike and Car Wash on Plot 53 in Hillside, Randfontein.
Entrance to the event will be R20 and the money raised will go towards assisting 37-year-old Bernadette Guthrie in her fight against cancer and will pay for her treatment.
Local resident Lena Donaldson, who also helps in organising the event, said Guthrie suffers from triple-negative liver cancer which spread to her chest area.
.
“Bernadette has been going for chemo for two years and her next appointment is on October 25 and according to the doctors, the chances of her ever going into remission are slim. We are really lucky to still have her but the problem is we have to purchase some of the essentials ourselves and it is costly. The patches she uses are the only thing that numbs her pain and they cost around R2 500 for ten patches.
“They only last for approximately 20 days and then there’s drips, delivery of pills and fuel costs to the hospital and back which is around R2 000 a month which also need to be factored in,” said Donaldson who added that they are hoping people will come through on the day and be willing to assist Bernadette.
