What does democracy mean to residents?

Randfontein residents from all walks of life talk about democracy.

The Randfontein Herald approached residents and asked what democracy means to them.

Shop owner David Lengole described democracy as a better life. To him, democracy resembles freedom of speech, movement, and the right to vote. He stated that if a country has democracy, no one should suffer from poverty and crime.

Anna Tsotetsi.

Resident Anna Tsotetsi said democracy means serving the God that she loves. She claimed that if people are free, they should also be free of corruption.

Jappie van Zyl.

Car guard Jappie van Zyl is a big fan of democracy and says it means freedom.

Wilma Jansen van Vuuren.

Another resident, Wilma Jansen van Vuuren, said, “Democracy is not being applied to the country’s people. Democracy means freedom. How can we have freedom if our loved ones are being kidnapped and crime rates are so high?”

“I am not entirely sure what freedom means to me. But I do know that there is democracy,” Marios Matlou stated.
