Residents’ favourite jolly meal
Locals talk about the recipe they cannot go without on Christmas Day.
The Randfontein Herald hit the streets to ask some residents what their favourite Christmas dishes are.

Mchayo ‘Big Man’ Thafeni said his favourite recipe is Mtshumbula which is a Shangani dish. Mchayo explained the dish consists of vegetable roots which can be eaten as is or it can be crushed into grain to eat as pap. A complementary side dish like red meat or fish can also be added to make the recipe more rich.

Phinias Ndoga has a special chicken stew recipe which he loves to cook for his family on Christmas. He explained he usually boils tomatoes and onions until it turns into a soupy substance. Thereafter he adds his special spice mixture to the soup. It is traditional for him and his family to buy a live chicken from the market.
After slaughtering the chicken, Phinias finally boiled the meat in a pot along with the tomato and onion mix. He added he usually tastes his food before putting it on the table to make sure it tastes perfect.
Johan Marais said he and his family enjoy a typical braai with different salads. What makes the meal most special is that the whole family gathers to share a feast, said Johan.
