67 minutes of kindness: What’s happening in Randfontein today
Randfontein gears up to celebrate Mandela Day with heart and action. Here’s a list of what is happening in town and how you could play a part.
Former president Nelson Mandela once said, “Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu”, which means you must serve your fellow man.
Today, July 18, people from all over the country will be giving 67 minutes of their time for this very reason – giving back to their community.
Here is what’s happening in Randfontein and where you can help out:
• Cast Aways Animal Sanctuary has invited the community to join them and volunteer throughout the day. Contact Louisa Rossouw on 072 812 3333.
• Semamotra Music and Entertainment NPC is hosting a talent search and worship event, as well as a soup kitchen in Kocksoord. The community is welcome to join in. Contact Kim on 068 292 8893.
• The RandWest SPCA is asking the community to come together to help them with their petrol costs. René van Straten, SPCA manager, explained they spend between R15 000 and R20 000 on petrol each month. Their goal is to collect enough donations to cover at least one month’s petrol costs. Donations can be paid into their bank account, or contact René on 078 911 0538.
René added, “Petrol is one of our biggest monthly expenses, since we have vehicles on the road each day to help animals in need. We try to spend as much time in the less fortunate areas; however, we cannot drive unnecessarily. If we can’t keep our petrol tanks full, we cannot do our job.”
She continued that they deal with complaints of animals in need daily, most of which they follow up on at least twice to ensure the circumstances have improved. They also have emergencies of sick or injured animals, in serious need, that cannot be planned for. They also cover a large area, from Fochville to Johannesburg and as far as Magaliesburg, so they drive many kilometres.
Other initiatives taking place around town:
• Feed The Need Soup Kitchen will once again hand out food to the community of Toekomsrus
• Lenmed Randfontein Private Hospital will visit Baba G Safe Haven in Greenhills to drop off donations
• Bekkersdal Old Age Home residents will receive much-needed donations
• Ebuhleni home-based Care Project will treat the needy children in Mohlakeng
