Sustainable food garden takes root in Brandvlei
A new community food garden was launched, as well as a borehole, at the Rotanganedza Community Care Centre to help address hunger and water shortages while equipping residents with valuable agricultural skills.
Provincial government, in collaboration with Sanlam and Assupol, spent July 17 at the Rotanganedza Community Care Centre in Brandvlei as part of a Mandela Day outreach initiative.
The care centre project has become a beacon of hope in the area, providing vital services to hundreds of vulnerable residents each day. These include HIV and Aids support programmes, counselling services, food assistance, and broader community development initiatives aimed at uplifting those in need.
During the visit, a newly landscaped community food garden was officially launched in partnership with Sanlam and Assupol. As part of the initiative, a borehole was also donated to help address ongoing water shortages in the community.
The project aims to establish and strengthen sustainable food gardens to ensure beneficiaries have access to fresh produce. Beyond improving food security, the initiative also promotes skills development, encourages community participation, supports environmental sustainability, and creates opportunities for income generation.
In a further boost to community empowerment, residents who completed agricultural training received certificates recognising their newly acquired skills and preparing them to actively contribute to the project’s long-term success.
