As South Africa prepares to celebrate Heritage Month in September, a Brandvlei cultural group is helping keep Setswana culture alive through traditional dance.

The group, Ditau Dia Rora Cultural Roots, which means ‘Lions Roaring’, was founded by 23-year-old Ipeleng Kgang, who has been passionate about Setswana cultural dancing since she was seven years old.

Kgang said growing up surrounded by Setswana culture gave her a deep appreciation for her heritage, and she now wants to share that passion with younger generations.

Passing on traditions

“I am proud of my Setswana culture that I grew up in. I started dancing cultural Setswana dances when I was still in primary school at seven years old, and now, at 23, I am well versed in the cultural dances and traditions of my culture,” she said.

“I told myself, with my talent, I will help other young kids in my area to also have a love for the culture.”

Through dance, Ditau Dia Rora Cultural Roots gives young people an opportunity to learn about their traditions, celebrate their identity and keep the cultural practices of their community alive.

For Kgang, every performance is more than entertainment – it is a way of ensuring that Setswana heritage continues to be passed from one generation to the next.
